At the painting party of my goddaughter, Mattea, I invited her friends to do a group painting as a gift for her. We used a prepared palette with all the colors laid out (big mistake!), and in 5 minutes our group masterpiece turned into a big birthday mud pie. I tried to salvage it by painting a portrait, Mattea herself joined in, and voila, we ended up with a collaborative portrait! What a super cool 7th birthday treat.

Added finishing touches today to this portrait of my good friend, Cez, painted at a forest reserve north of Manila two weeks ago. Was a slow painting day because I deviated from my normal blue tones to give way to warmer browns and yellow greens. Seems I’m moving towards a warmer palette these days…a sign of warmer (i.e. happier) insides maybe?

I’ve painted this house atop a cliff many times, but this time it came out calm and at ease. What an interesting greeting as my first painting at the new studio.

New studio door sign on the way!

Portfolio

Painting a new door sign for my studio (getting ready to open it up!) and this lilac came out. That blue from a #wip behind it is also very nice Might switch back to my default blues by the end of this...will see! Started painting to quiet the mind so don't want to overthink this. Possibilities, possibilities!#playplayplay

Montalut Jan-Apr 2016 (2)

Two years ago I found myself pinned down to a daily schedule, accountable to people I was tasked to lead and serve. I did my best to deliver, but that endeavor did not prosper economically and came to an end last month. The personal and communal growth it fostered cannot be doubted, and will always be part of my ongoing story, but I got to validate, too, that adhering to a fixed daily schedule is catastrophic for me.

Now that I am free from daily external commitments again, what do I want to comprise my everydays?

Lynn Jericho recently wrote a great outline of a perfect day:

The Perfect Outer Day

Around my work…I have served. I have created. I have produced. I have earned.

Around my relationships…I have connected. I have listened in. I have spoken out. I have laughed/cried.

Around my home…I have not made a mess or added to the mess.  I have maintained order and made beauty.

Around my body…I have moved. I have eaten well.

Around my senses…I have enjoyed my perceptions. I have achieved a balance between stimulating and soothing myself particularly in regard to what I have seen, heard, and tasted.

Around my responsibilities…I have tended to my money, my laundry, my agreements.

The Perfect Inner Day

I have been surprised.

I have remained calm.

I have felt joy.

I have forgiven.

I have noticed and been grateful.

I have bounced back.

I have leapt forward.

I have been generous.

I have been kind.

I have evolved.

What joy there is in the subtleties of the every day! The magic really is in the little big things.

Creative Community as an Alternative to traditional education

Uncategorized

Here’s an excerpt from a paper I wrote in October 2015 on Alternative Education:

This idea is still a work-in-progress, but the key points here are that it [my model for alternative education] must be grounded in a creative community that will shape and support it (mentally, financially, psychologically, and spiritually). The school will exist for and because of the community, and will be made up of people from the community itself. Both teachers and learners —adult learners and children alike— are active members of the community, and so are their respective families. Traditional labels of learning will be blurred as the learning environment itself is blurred: not confined to a physical classroom, the whole community becomes the learning space. The classroom becomes so flexible and interchangeable with home, workplace, outdoors. We will see less or zero compartmentalization into subjects and more integrated lessons, such as nature walks on rice fields with farmers to discuss natural science, math, language. Technical knowhow will be nurtured in a more controlled environment, but still in an integrated manner, perhaps through apprenticeships.

For my dream learning community, the whole community itself will be a school.

In this integrated, intentionally educational community, what will the adults be doing? They will be busy doing their own creative tinkering—whether as professionals, entrepreneurs, techno geeks, artists, architects, etc.—and at the same time, just by being living examples, they are already manifesting the desired learning outcomes for the children. Education will be two-pronged—for children and for adults. Adults also need to learn how to be artists again, to trust intuition and allow an atmosphere of creativity to come alive in the community. One of the gifts, for example, of a Waldorf education is that it is a healing education for the whole family. Many of my Waldorf parent friends enjoy the re-learning they go through by being involved in the schooling of their children in the Waldorf method. This kind of openness of the adults to re-learn is just as critical to cultivate as educating the children.

Free from the pressure of grades and requirements, students (and teachers) are given a safe and vibrant space to decide what they need to learn, and apply it to the canvas right away. The same format can be studied for a technology-driven League, an entrepreneurship-driven League, all co-existing and co-sharing the space within a community, and in time, influencing the greater community around it.

U.S. Department of Arts and Culture

Uncategorized

More echoes of the dream in other parts of the world! Have already enlisted as a Citizen Artist as a start to widening the network and dialogue. 😉

I imagine a future where there are cultural centers in every town, arts bodegas on every city block, and a Culture Corps bringing creative engagement to hospitals, schools, prisons, libraries, and beyond. I see story circles held in public places, parades welcoming refugees, and neighborhood artists-in-residence issuing creative calls to action that create opportunities for anyone to experience solidarity and flow.

From: Yes, Art and Culture Can Change the World by Adam Horowitz, March 2016

Adam Horowitz is Chief Instigator of the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, an action network of artists and cultural workers mobilizing creativity in the service of social justice. As an organizer, performer, and writer, Adam has worked internationally at the intersection of art, education, and social change.
