Drawing of my studio

Papayas and rolling the dice.

Just signed my second painting for the year, yay. This one’s a visual commentary on food and diet.
After years of eating “healthy food”, I’ve realized that eating is, above all else, a social activity. I’ve felt the isolating effects of being a health nut — friends and family would either fawn over me to make sure there was something vegan in the menu, or they would just avoid inviting me to food-related activities, which surprisingly covered almost all social engagements: meals, meeting up for coffee, drinks or dessert. I was the one who needed special care, and it became tedious, not just for them but for myself as well. In the end, I began questioning why I was putting so much effort into being healthy, so I settled for balance: I now eat everything, but in moderation. At the end of the day, we can take care of ourselves all we want — whether for health security or vanity — but there are still no assurances that things will turn out the way we want. We still roll the dice everyday.
Adaptation of Manansala’s Mangga at Papaya using analogous colors. I chose the range from red violet to blue green.

Was such a struggle to do! Cubism is no joke to copy. 😛

Who turns heads when we pray?
16×20 inches
Acrylic on canvas

We pray, often with a litany of petitions or thanks. We surrender to the Mighty Hand that controls everything, but really, who is this person/being/creator who has the last say? And are we really frozen statues who have no say in how our lives turn out?
Adaptation of Filipino master HR Ocampo’s “Lunar Ritual”.

Work in progress:
Day#1: Finally starting on the 1st of three paintings due this week. Work in progress. Based on Filipino master HR Ocampo’s “Lunar Ritual”

Day#2: Calling it a night. Layer1 done. Working title: Who turns heads when we pray?
Day#3: Presented this in class, but was asked to rework it to bring out the reds and greens. Lesson learned: ask questions, mas okay makulit kaysa umulit.

Gmorning! Here’s a #drawing I made for my goddaughter, Kiesha.

Went for a day trip to the beach just because I wanted to see the sea before the year ended.
So glad for girl friends who are as crazy as I am. Kaladkarin when needed!

As a finale to the Adopt-a-Master series for drawing class (I chose to make tributes to Van Gogh), we were asked to do an open composition in the same size, this time in our own style. Teacher gave us this peg: “Years from now, when I search your name online, this work should come out.” Surprisingly this took more effort than an adaptation, and there was tremendous pressure –self-inflicted yes, but junormous just the same– to reduce my vision to a single work. As with all plates though, it was the deadline that gave the push to proceed with the work, and here I had it…a landscape piece of the mountains and seas of El Nido, Palawan, where I spent some of my most adventurous travels a few years ago.
